Æthnik is an online magazine that caters to the Creative City of Baguio and its environs. We write about arts, artists and crafters, creative spaces, culture, and events. Æthnik is a combination of aesthetics, ethnic, and by changing the last letter with “k” instead of hard “c”, it connotes the popular Cordillera weaving known as “ikat.”
On October 31, 2017, Baguio City became the first city in the Philippines to be part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. This title was attained through the endeavor of government officials and individuals who saw the potential of the city to earn this prestigious title. Thanks to the already existing networks of creative people coming from the different parts of Cordillera and surrounding provinces who created the distinctive sub-culture of creativity, the city didn’t have to dig deep or work hard to attain the title of Creative City for Crafts and Folk Arts.
Æthnik will tell stories of Baguio creatives and their journey as artists and artisans and the driving force that created a community thriving with creativity. As an addition, this will soon serve as a marketing platform for art and crafts to give the creatives an option to sell their masterpieces. The platform is being setup and will be online soon. Ætnik is managed by Pasa-Kalye Group of Artists (PGA).
